JUNE, 2010 NEWSLETTER

Jim McCord (Curator at Terrell Heritage Museum) found this old RAF photo at a flea market and was gracious enough to give it to our museum. Can any of you identify the men and/or plane?

Visitors
A group of about 65 young business men and women, who were attending a conference at the University of Texas in Dallas, visited the museum on May 22nd. They were from all over the world. Some of the countries represented were: Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, Ghana, Argentina and the Philippines. Our thanks to The Terrell Chamber of Commerce for arranging their visit.

On May 26th the Senior Citizens group from First Baptist Church, Terrell was here. Several of the 26 members grew up in Terrell and remembered fondly the time the RAF boys were here.

Welcome
The museum is fortunate this summer to have Grace Hughbanks (intern) working with us. She attends Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee and is majoring in history with relevant experience in exhibit designs. Expect a exciting new look at the museum.

Changes have been made to the RAF burial site at Oakland Memorial Cemetery. The monument has been moved to a more desirable location. There is no longer a flag pole (ruling by The British War Commission).

Some of you will remember the soda fountain at Bass Drug Store. Peggy Bass Holton has given the museum a new display created in honor of her husband, Major Charles H. Holton. The Major flew a B-29 Bomber, scattering warning leaflets on Japan prior to the dropping of the atomic bomb. The display features replicas of the bomber, Zeros and has a “floor” map of Tokyo Bay made to scale. Greg Nottingham designed and built the display.

Jim Rolfe, long time member of the BFTS Museum brought in two wonderful pictures which will be on loan for an extended period of time. One is a beautifully framed picture “The Warrior’s Sword Had Come to Rest” signed by the artist, James Dietz. It depicts memorabilia of German General Der Jagdflieger Adolf Galland. The other picture is by Robert Taylor named “Hurricane Scramble”. Within the frame of this work of art are twenty five $5.00 commemorative coins. The picture is signed by five pilots of the Hurricane.

Activities are being planned for those of you who wish to stay an extended period of time either before or after the September 17-19 week-end.

The Holiday Inn Express will be acting as host for the BFTS Fly-In week-end and will block rooms at a reduced rate for those attending the functions. Reservations must be made by SEPTEMBER 1ST to qualify for the discounted rate of $85.00. Only a limited number of rooms will be set aside so don’t miss out on this opportunity. The hotel is located at 300 Tanger Drive in Terrell (zip code 75160). Telephone number is (972) 563-7888. Breakfast is provided. For your information, they offer transportation to activities (in addition to rides provided by the BFTS staff). It is located within walking distance to Tanger Outlet Mall and the I-Hop Restaurant.

For Texas “locals”, instead of driving home late, after a gala Friday night at the Dinner/Dance, consider spending the night in Terrell and be rested for the Fly-In activities on Saturday. You might want to think about staying in Terrell for the whole week-end and attend Memorial Services on Sunday afternoon.
