The British Flying Training School Museum located at the Terrell Municipal Airport is hosting the 70th Anniversary of the WWII era LEND-LEASE ACT and the FOUNDING OF THE 1ST BRITISH FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL (BFTS) IN THE UNITED STATES LOCATED IN TERRELL, TX. The citizens of Terrell and Kaufman County hosted over 2000 RAF Cadets and trained them as pilots at the Royal Air Force Training School between 1941 the end of WWII. This was the time, as the late Martha Allan stated; “The British Invaded Terrell.”
The Celebration is to recognize the citizens of Terrell and North Texas that made this joint effort possible and to celebrate the cooperation between Great Britain, Canada and the USA then and today in the struggles to maintain our freedoms. The BFTS Emblem says it best, “The Seas Divide But The Skies Unite.
Norman Huneycutt, President of the BFTS Museum, stated that the board of directors realizes that after seventy years we have lost too many of the brave residents, civilian instructors, employees and RAF pilots trained in Terrell and all must be given the thanks and praise for their war time efforts. He also stated that the Museum is grateful for the partnership in the 70th Anniversary Celebration from the City of Terrell, Terrell Independent School District, Terrell Chamber of Commerce, County, regional communities, state and federal officials, the Canadian Government and the British Commonwealth.
The 70th Anniversary Celebration will be at the BFTS Museum with the lunch and program in the Madix Airplane Hanger located adjacent to the museum. The program includes as Key-Note Speakers the Consul-General of Great Britain, Paul Lynch and the Consul-General of Canada, Paula Caldwell St-Onge. Students from TISD Jazz Band and choirs of TISD and SWCC will entertain and sing national anthems of the three nations. Elected officials, regional business leaders, educators, students and citizens of North Texas are encouraged to attend to honor our elder guests and their families.
