A few hardy souls made their way up a mountain in the Kiamichi Wilderness in southeastern Oklahoma on Feb 10, 2019 to remember four Royal Air Force cadets who crashed during a training flight in 1943 The young Brits were on a cross country training flight from the No 1 British Flying Training School in Terrell TX when they ran into bad weather and three planes crashed, resulting in four fatalities.

On February 26, 2018, more than 100 citizens gathered on a mountainside in Oklahoma’s Kiamichi Wilderness on a cold, rainy Sunday afternoon to honor four young RAF pilots from Course 12 who lost their lives during World WarII.

The Museum was fortunate to connect with John Bickers, the brother of Ken and begin a dialogue back and forth between here and the UK.  John has been kind enough to share some great photos and memorabilia, but most importantly he sent a copy of the family’s heartwarming story of their search for his brother’s crash site.

The No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum, located in Terrell, Texas, is thrilled to announce its grand re-opening and dedication on Saturday, March 25th at 10am.  The grand re-opening coincides with the annual Big Band Hangar Dance and Dinner, celebrating RAF cadets of the No. 1 British Flying School and raising funds for the museum.

The Dallas Arms Collectors Association (DACA) enjoyed a day-long excursion visiting local WWII and military museums. The highlight of the day was its conclusion at the No 1 BFTS Museum.

The 75th anniversary of the Terrell Airport and the No.1 British Flying Training School had nearly 4,000 visitors, staff and volunteers in attendance. The Trinity Valley Young Marines posted the colors to start the day. There were historic re-inactors, a car show, military vehicles, planes and helicopters of all manner, and a brilliant Air Show to cap the day.

Motorcycle riders from around the world were invited to attend the Allied Memorial Remembrance Ride creating one ride worldwide, united in remembrance of our fallen heroes from the allied forces, past and present, who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

We were honored to be in the presence of HRH The Duke of Gloucester on November 1, as we paid respectful remembrance to those who died while training at the No 1 BFTS, and ultimately to all fallen military. More than 200 guests joined us for the annual service and tea, including many from the Order of St John, and several serving RAF currently stationed at Majors Field, Greenville, TX.

The 8th Annual Flight of Our Fathers was the most unusual event that we have ever had. The addition of the Falcon Flight precision formation flying team, Adam Baker in his Extra 330LX, Randy Ball with his MIG 17, and 4 other special flying teams made an exciting morning for the visitors to the Fly In.

LCDR Phil Webb, U.S. Navy, brought his PT-27 Stearman to Terrell for the Fly-In. According to the logs, this airplane was originally used at the No. 1 BFTS during 1943- 1944. It was a joy to see it back where its career began. It was also a special moment for our two visiting RAF airmen, Nicholas “Axel” Foley and Pete Holt, to fly in the same plane that the former cadets flew during their training in Terrell.

Things have been busy at the Museum this summer. Two of our board members traveled to New York to secure and transport an AT-6 that was donated to the Museum by the Aviation High School. The parts and manuals that were donated are being used to accelerate the restoration of the Miss Pauline. In addition we were privileged to be part of the Allied Memorial Remembrance ride for the sixth year in a row.

The AT-6 Harvard Miss Pauline has a center wing section, landing gear, tail section, engine & propeller! It was an exciting day when the volunteers wheeled the wing section to the Museum, hoisted the fuselage up and transformed it into a plane in one day.

The Flights of Our Fathers Fly-In and Memorial event was held on September 21 and 22. More than 2,500 visitors enjoyed the day with us.

The Terrell Marine Corps League hosted the Memorial Day service on May 27th at the Veterans Memorial Park in Terrell. The service honors all servicemen and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country. Special guest speakers included Mayor Hal Richards and Museum President Don Thurman.

In September, the museum had a traveling exhibit at the Terrell Public Library, and in November the exhibit traveled to the Cedar Hill Public Library in Cedar Hill, Texas.

The Dinner-Dance was held in the Texas National Guard Armory this year. Flags, balloons, twinkle lights and images from the museum’s archives decorated the military building. Food was catered by Eddie Deen, and Larry Johnson’s Heritage Brass Band provided 1940’s music with the “Andrews Sisters” singing along. Dancers from the Dallas Swing Dance Society were on hand to encourage everyone to get on the dance floor!

A collaborative effort will soon allow a cornerstone of Terrell’s rich history to take new flight. On March 10, members of the North East Texas Fine Arts Alliance joined supporters of the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum in unveiling a mural honoring the WWII aviation school that will be placed downtown in the coming weeks.

On April 7, 2011 the British Flying Training School Museum in Terrell, TX in partnership with the Consul Generals of Great Britain and Canada, the US and TX elected officials, the TX Historical Commission, the City of Terrell, the Terrell Chamber of Commerce and the Terrell Independent School District enjoyed a daylong celebration of the cooperation between Great Britain, Canada and the US during WWII to defeat the forces of evil and preserved freedom.

Press Release - 70th Anniversary of the WWII era LEND-LEASE ACT

The British Flying Training School Museum  located at the Terrell Municipal Airport is hosting the 70th Anniversary of the WWII era LEND-LEASE ACT and the FOUNDING OF THE 1ST BRITISH FLYING TRAINING SCHOOL (BFTS) IN THE UNITED STATES LOCATED IN TERRELL, TX.  The citizens of Terrell and Kaufman County hosted over 2000 RAF Cadets and trained them as pilots at the Royal Air Force Training School between 1941 the end of WWII. This was the time, as the late Martha Allan stated; “The British Invaded Terrell.”

The Texas Historical Commission has awarded the museum a matching grant fund in the amount of $7,000 to support curriculum, exhibit and workshop development on the history of WWII Royal Air Force Training and aviation in Texas. Plans in this regard are underway with the cooperation of Darla Pollard of the Terrell Independent School District. Bob Welch of the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field in Dallas has offered mentoring help in this regard.
